Yoga Therapy (Ava)
-
This is how I put it:
Yoga therapy is a custom approach to building resilience by applying yoga practices and philosophy to improve performance and speed up recovery, holistically.
-
A yoga teacher (which I also am) helps you achieve general wellness. What happens in a healthy yoga class is the teacher leaves it to the student’s discretion whether or not they should participate in any particular practice. But what if you don’t know that when you’re feeling emotionally vulnerable, it’s better to avoid heart openers for a while? Or that deep breathing can actually aggravate certain conditions like TBI & concussion? Or that a vinyasa flow wouldn’t be the best for someone with knee PFPS?
A yoga therapist gets to know you and your health concerns and goals better before recommending specific yoga practices and philosophy. If a pose or philosophy is contraindicated to your condition, they won’t guide you through it. In the vast majority of yoga classes, this doesn’t happen (and that’s okay, that’s why yoga therapists are here!).

Currently, we can work with you virtually via Zoom.
We have some beautiful ideas for the future, so continue to check in.

Literally anybody!
You don’t need to be flexible. You can keep any faith you want. You don’t need to have props if you don’t have/want them.
I choose to focus on those who have a brain injury just because I’ve been through it and I used yoga therapy to bring me out of the darkness and towards the light and I also have a background in neuroscience.
-
I am enthusiastic about working with clients with TBI because of my personal condition. If you haven’t read my testimony yet, it’s on the About Page.
But honestly, my door is open to people who are open to working with me. And my training supports a plethora of conditions, not just TBI!
-
I have:
A bachelor’s degree in Cognitive & Computational Neuroscience from the Ohio State University
A 200 hour yoga teacher training certification from Rishikesh Yogpeeth in Rishikesh, India
A 500 hour yoga teacher training certification from MUIH (now known as NDMU SOIH)
In 2027, I will have a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy as well as the C-IAYT credential
Nearly 20 years of experience with yoga from personal practice
Nearly 7 years of experience with yoga from professional teaching
Currently there is no state-sanctioned license for yoga therapists (similar to massage therapy or physical therapy), but as I understand it, the industry is moving towards this as well as obtaining CPT codes to be able to bill insurance for our healing services.
-
It’s possible! Though it’s typically not covered at this time. Some medical professionals refer patients to yoga therapists as part of integrative care and there are yoga therapists working in hospitals too, but we just haven’t gotten to that milestone yet as a profession for widespread insurance coverage.
For comparison, the field of chiropracty was in this same stage a few decades ago. As it was emerging it faced criticism, skepticism, and more challenges, but today it’s way more widely accepted and increasingly covered by insurance. It’s my understanding that we aim to follow in their footsteps, but these kinds of processes take time. In the meantime, here are other ways to pay:
HSA or FSA funds
Employer wellness stipends
Self-pay
